Six shots was all it took for Rosies to leave Havanas shaken and stirred as a brace from Jamie Edwards and goals from Mc Shakespeare, Dan Abbott and DJ DeccyJ gave them the sweet taste of victory in a football match to raise money for children’s charity Variety.
Edwards kicked off the scoring after just five minutes with an assist from Dave Madeley and doubled his tally six minutes later with a stunning angled shot.
Havanas tried to hit back, but Rosies defended well and Paddy Fleetwood cleared the danger.
At the other end Alex Gilfoyle forced a strong overhead shot from the Havanas keeper and DJ DeccyJ also worked the keeper.
Switching to 4-4-2 midway through the first half gave Rosies a surer footing in the game and Havanas struggled to bypass Rosies powerhouse Dan Abbott.
Rosies continued to threaten and Dale Hart went close on 25 minutes before seeing his headed shot cleared off the line.
Deccy was denied again just after the half hour mark before Abbott once again stopped Havanas in their tracks. A rapid Rosies counterattack led by Sean Payne and Mc Shakespeare followed but ultimately ended in a shot fired high over the bar.
And on 40 minutes Rosies’ dominance paid off with a typically well-struck shot from Abbott.
Half-time: Rosies 3 Havanas 0
It was more of the same as the second half kicked off, with Rosies’ enjoying the lion’s share of the possession and although shakes took the ball too far into the corner, he retained possession and eventually managed to link up with Madeley before getting the ball back and finding the net on 46 minutes.
Havanas were finding it difficult to close Rosies down, and having managed to clear their lines and deny Shakes, they tried counterattack, leaving their defence lacking and a wide open goal for Madeley to penetrate. The somersault celebration was another highlight!
Good work from Hart on the wing came to nothing as Rosies had lost concentration and when Deccy fired a cross into the box, Madeley couldn’t quite get on the end of it.
But as the clock approached the hour mark, Deccy decided to go himself and on 60 minutes pitched a soaring strike right home.
There was a slight break in play when the ball left the pitch and hit a brand new car on 63 minutes.
John Bailey had had little to do in Rosies’ goal but made some important saves during the second half, while goalline clearances from Paul Brunton also helped Rosies keep a clean sheet.
Some good movement from Alex Gilfoyle gave Rosies some more opportunities but they just couldn’t find the net again. Hart missed a header on 80 minutes, passed instead of going for goal two minutes later Sean Payne fired the ball high over the crossbar before shooting straight at the keeper. An overhead kick from Hart failed to find the target on 85 minutes and Abbott’s final kick of the game also cleared the crossbar on 88 minutes. It didn’t matter though as the game had long since been won.
Rosies took the bragging rights, but charity was the real winner and everybody remained in good spirits. Between the playing fee, badges sold at the game and fines for those who missed their post-match penalty, more than £200 was raised towards the £300 overall target for Variety.
